Music

The Music tab is the same grid again, asking about tunes. It starts by showing only the musicians. If you’re taking up an instrument, press View: Musicians, beside the zoom, to show everybody and find your own column.

Anybody who has already answered keeps their column either way.

Each cell holds two answers again. The first list is different from the one for dances, because knowing a tune is a different kind of knowing from knowing a dance.

How well you know it: Could lead it and By heart both count as could play it. Nearly by heart, From the dots, Could follow and Don't know it all mean you couldn’t play it without help.

Whether you want to: The same five as for dances: Love it, Happy to, Don't mind, Under duress or Don't like.

A note: One line for anything else, like “not leading it” or “only in G”.

You can only fill in your own column. Whoever holds an office that edits the music can fill in anybody’s (the offices table says which), and so can an admin.

The totals

Each tune has two totals:

Could play it: Everybody who answered Could lead it or By heart, minus anybody who said Don't like.

Could lead it: Only those who answered Could lead it. It has its own total because a tune nobody can start is a tune the side can’t play, however many could join in.

For example, if 4 people answered By heart and 1 answered Could lead it, Could play it shows 5 and Could lead it shows 1.

Tunes and dances

A dance’s edit screen is where you say which tunes it uses. Each tune’s own page then lists the dances that use it. You can also pair them from a tune’s edit screen, under Played for.

A tune’s own page

It’s laid out like a dance’s: what it’s played for, who can play it, how it goes, then notes and where it came from.

How it goes is files and links: the dots as a PDF or photo, a recording alongside, and links to anything on somebody else’s website. Recordings get a player you can drag through.

If you can edit the music, Upload and the crosses are on the edit screen and work straight away, as with dances. A bar shows how far an upload has got, which helps when a recording is a few megabytes and you’re uploading from a field.
